wineIBIZA – Wine produced in the Balearic Islands is proving increasingly popular with a record amount sold last year.

A total of 48,201 hectolitres was sold in 2014, an increase of 11.3% on the previous year, with a turnover of €29,919,186, a 13.4% increase. The rise is especially significant as Spanish wine sales as a whole decreased by 5.4% last year according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

12% of Balearic wine was bought in Germany and 3.2% in Switzerland however by far the biggest consumer of Balearic wine was the Balearic Islands themselves, accounting for 76% of total sales, a 7.9% increase on 2013. In total, vintners used a total of 7,695,554 pounds of grapes, 3.5% less than the year before, producing 48,675 hectoliters of wine, 5.8% less than 2013.
