The number represents a 2.3% increase over last year and established Ibiza airport as the fifth busiest airport in Spain during August after Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and Malaga ahead of other major Spanish destinations such as Alicante, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Valencia, Bilbao and Seville. A total of 12,481 flights operated at the airport in August which is a 5.8% increase over the same month last year.
According to airport operator AENA, August was the seventeenth consecutive month that Ibiza airport broke records for passenger numbers and the fourth consecutive month that it broke records for both passenger numbers and flight operations. The busiest day of the month was on Saturday August 1, with 488 flights and 49,662 passengers in total.
Over 400,000 passengers came from Spanish destinations (an increase of 8.8% on last year), while 349,855 passengers originating in the UK (0.8% increase) and 214,803 passengers (a 6% increase) represented the second and third largest influxes after the national market. All three Balearic airports registered growth in passengers and flights on the previous year.
