Fewer Tourists but Higher Spending: Ibiza's Unique 2026 Summer Trend

This summer in Ibiza marked a significant shift as hotel stays from May to July decreased to nearly decade-old levels, dropping by almost 4% compared to 2017. Despite this dip, tourist spending surged by an impressive 14.6%, reaching over €1.121 billion, according to Ibestat and the Ministry of Tourism. The island also experienced lower visitor density, with fewer tourists than last year during peak months. Efforts to control illegal holiday rentals contributed to this change, redirecting guests to designed tourist zones and reducing pressure on residential areas. As luxury renovations lead to fewer but higher quality accommodations, Ibiza doesn't equate fewer nights with lesser economic impact, urging a reevaluation of how value is generated on this beloved destination.

Distinct fluctuations were observed throughout the month, with early August matching last year’s numbers, while the latter half saw more noticeable declines. Despite these subtle shifts, the season overall remains bullish, with average occupancy from May to August sitting at 85.21%, up from last year. Ibiza saw growth in nearly all areas, with Sant Antoni and the bay leading the rise. Amidst these figures, Maria Costa, president of the hotel association, remained optimistic, highlighting the negligible nature of such variations given the overall high occupancy rates. However, Formentera’s hotel sector shows concern following the August dip and is calling for careful evaluation, suggesting that factors such as vehicle limits and restricted beach services may have played a part. The focus remains on balancing sustainable tourism with maintaining the islands’ allure for visitors.
