Ibiza Joins the Race for Ecological Recognition This Summer

Ibiza Joins the Race for Ecological Recognition This Summer

Ibiza's vibrant nightlife scene is taking an eco-friendly turn as the island teams up with over 846 local hospitality venues to compete in Ecovidrio's Green Flag Movement. This initiative celebrates the commitment to glass recycling and circular economy practices specifically in bustling coastal destinations. Ibiza will go head-to-head with 20 other municipalities in the Balearic Islands for one of the two coveted Green Flags. Last year, the accolades went to Mallorca’s Capdepera and Formentera, but this summer brings fresh competition and the possibility for new champions to emerge. During the summer months, a significant volume of single-use glass containers circulates through the hospitality sector, which accounts for almost half of the generated waste. To address this, Ecovidrio is deploying 200 new containers and providing 1,300 rolling bins to participating venues across the island. Additionally, environmental education sessions will be delivered to bar and restaurant staff to promote sustainable management practices. To secure a Green Flag, regions must boost their glass collection compared to previous years and ensure participation from at least half the local hospitality businesses. The programme also aims to reward nine exceptional venues for their sustainable practices, with last year's local winner being Ca Mimosa in Ibiza. The chosen venues will be treated to a gourmet dining experience and a masterclass by Michelin-starred chef Andrés Torres. Highlighting the success from last year, over 15,800 tonnes of glass were recycled in the Balearics, reducing CO₂ emissions equivalent to removing over 4,200 cars from roads for a year. This initiative embodies the island’s ongoing effort to tackle the surge of waste seen during the high-traffic summer months, ensuring the paradisiacal shores of Ibiza stay pristine and inviting for years to come.
