Ibiza Hotels Face Staff Shortages Amid Growing Seasonal Demands

As the 2026 season unfolds, hotels in Ibiza and Formentera are grappling with significant staffing challenges. A recent survey by FEHIF reveals that 62% of hotel businesses struggle the most with hiring housekeepers, followed closely by kitchen staff at 56% and restaurant personnel at 44%. Larger establishments with over 200 employees face the brunt of these shortages, with 83.3% reporting difficulties in hiring housekeeping staff. The issue extends to kitchen roles as well—100% of the larger businesses concur on the hiring challenges. Absent workforce has added further strain, impacting 72% of hotels with increased workloads and overtime demands. The survey also highlights a glaring gap in training opportunities, with half of the businesses finding existing programs inadequate. Suggestions for improvement include hosting hospitality courses during the quieter winter months, offering technical and language training, and enhancing management skills.

Ibiza's Housing Crisis: Hotels Step Up to Support Staff

In a recent study from the Federation of Hotel Entrepreneurs of Ibiza and Formentera, a staggering 76% of hotels on the islands have begun providing housing to their staff amid a serious local accommodation crisis. This shift highlights the importance of lodging in attracting and keeping employees, an issue so significant that 90% of businesses now see it as the key factor in staff retention. Despite these efforts, half of the hotels still face challenges in maintaining their workforce due to housing constraints and high staff turnover rates. The situation is especially critical for larger establishments, where the demand for staff is greatest. As the island's hospitality sector confronts these hurdles, the call for public administration to tackle the housing scarcity grows louder, emphasising that business-led initiatives alone are not enough. The findings aim to drive future administrative strategies and improve workforce frameworks, establishing a comprehensive annual overview to navigate this ongoing crisis.

Ibiza Shines Brighter and Greener: New Rules to Tackle Light Pollution

Ibiza is stepping up its environmental game with fresh regulations aimed at curbing light pollution across the island. Unveiled by the Consell de Ibiza, the newly approved 'Reglamento de protección del medio nocturno' intends to harmonize night-time illumination with energy efficiency, natural preservation, and public safety. Existing establishments will have four years for compliance, while rules on light scheduling will take effect in just three months. The entire island, including key nightlife and tourist hotspots like Platja d’en Bossa and Sant Antoni, will be reclassified into zones with differing protections. The adjustments aim to maintain Ibiza's night-time allure while safeguarding its stunning natural landscapes. For UK tourists, these changes mean the island promises to offer an even more spectacular setting for those iconic sunsets and vibrant night outs—albeit with a greener twist.
