Crackdown on Illegal Holiday Rentals and Transport in Ibiza Intensifies

Ibiza’s authorities have stepped up their campaign against unauthorized holiday rentals and transport services, focusing on rooting out unscrupulous operators. Recently, the local police reported four new cases of illegal tourist accommodation, adding to the 11 already identified this year. These actions are part of a broader plan to regulate holiday rentals more tightly, ensuring compliance with legal requirements. The mayor, Rafa Triguero, emphasized that cracking down on illegal tourism activities is now a top priority.

Separately, a weekend sweep against illegal transport services resulted in fines totalling €27,400. These include penalties for unofficial ride services and for taxi violations such as not using the meter. Local authorities continue their proactive stance in preserving the island’s legal tourism sector and ensuring visitors have an authentic Ibiza experience.

Ibiza's July Tourism: Steady Numbers, Soaring Spending

July saw Ibiza and Formentera maintaining their tourist numbers, welcoming over 711,000 visitors, a slight 0.65% increase from last year. However, it's the spending habits that tell the real story, with tourists splashing out a staggering 1.059 billion euros, marking a 6.4% rise and breaking the 1 billion euro threshold for the first time in a single month during peak season. This spending surge outpaces visitor growth, underscoring the economic boost. The average tourist spend also climbed to 1,489 euros per trip, up 5.75%, while daily expenditures stayed consistent at around 271 euros. Both international and domestic tourists contributed to this spending increase, with Brits accounting for a daily spend of 224 euros. In contrast, German tourists showcased even higher spending, averaging 293 euros per day. From January to July, the islands welcomed approximately 2.1 million tourists, with a cumulative tourist spend hitting 2.585 billion euros, reflecting a 7.5% year-on-year rise. Despite steady tourist numbers, longer stays and more overnight bookings—reaching almost 3.9 million nights in July—signal increased island stays averaging 5.3 days and contributing to this financial uplift. International tourism remains robust, particularly from the UK, solidifying its position as a key market for the islands.

Ibiza's Cruise Day-Trippers: Spending Habits Shift Dramatically

This week, the Costa Esmeralda cruise ship made a brief stop in Ibiza, allowing hundreds of passengers to explore the island for just under seven hours. While some cruisers opted to visit Formentera, many headed straight to Ibiza Town's historic La Marina district. However, local shop owners and restaurateurs notice a marked change in spending behavior compared to previous years. Business owners, like Dolores Maretto of the Pasionaria boutique, report a decline in purchases, with tourists only buying small items like hats or sarongs. Maretto notes that July and August bring all-inclusive cruisers looking for bargains, while September visitors often spend more. Delays in disembarkation times are also hurting local businesses, as tourists arrive later in the day, impacting lunch service at spots like Porto Salé, where tables used to be full at lunchtime. Souvenir shops seem to be the exception, weathering the downturn better. Additionally, logistical challenges such as parking shortages and inadequate public transport are compounding these issues. Despite these concerns, trade representatives remain optimistic about September, predicting higher spending levels due to fewer but more affluent visitors.
