August brought a small decline in hotel occupancy rates for Ibiza and its sister island, Formentera. With figures from the Federation of Hotel Entrepreneurs of Ibiza and Formentera, it was noted that Ibiza’s hotels operated at an impressive 92.06% capacity, just shy of last year’s 92.35%. Meanwhile, Formentera experienced a more significant drop, recording 87.10% compared to 91.04%. Distinct fluctuations were observed throughout the month, with early August matching last year’s numbers, while the latter half saw more noticeable declines.
Despite these subtle shifts, the season overall remains bullish, with average occupancy from May to August sitting at 85.21%, up from last year. Ibiza saw growth in nearly all areas, with Sant Antoni and the bay leading the rise. Amidst these figures, Maria Costa, president of the hotel association, remained optimistic, highlighting the negligible nature of such variations given the overall high occupancy rates.
However, Formentera’s hotel sector shows concern following the August dip and is calling for careful evaluation, suggesting that factors such as vehicle limits and restricted beach services may have played a part. The focus remains on balancing sustainable tourism with maintaining the islands’ allure for visitors.
