The vibrant spirit of Sant Carles in Ibiza has dimmed with the passing of 100-year-old Ana Marí Torres, the heart and soul behind the iconic Bar Ca n'Anneta. Ana, known fondly as 'mamá Anneta', opened the bar with her husband Bartolomé Noguera Torres in 1942, transforming it from a family grocery into the island's first bar. Her establishment became a cultural touchstone during the 1970s, as American draft dodgers turned hippies found a safe haven on the island. Bar Anita wasn't just a hub for socialising; it doubled as a post office and even a makeshift clinic under Ana's care and generosity, with her administering medical shots when healthcare was scarce.
The bar, famous for its traditional menu and homemade 'herbes de Ca n'Anneta' liqueur, continues to attract tourists eager for an authentic taste of Ibiza. Honoured with numerous awards, including the Successful Business Trajectory Award in 2021, the bar remains firmly in the family, ensuring Ana's legacy lives on. Her granddaughter, Ana Maria Noguera, vows to maintain the bar's charm and tradition, upholding its status as a must-visit for Ibiza travellers.
