As the sun sets on Ibiza, the island is buzzing with the start of a new tourist season, met with optimism by local businesses despite a staggered opening of establishments. According to José Antonio Roselló from the Confederation of Business Associations in the Balearic Islands, while the season traditionally kicks off on May 1st, this year has seen a more gradual launch, heavily influenced by the later Easter dates. Many businesses have welcomed the early starters, with streets and roads already witnessing lively activity indicating a positive start.
The forecasts for the season suggest a strong performance for hotels and tourist-dependent sectors, although lingering international geopolitical tensions could impact the outlook. Despite potential threats like energy supply issues or rising costs, local sentiment remains encouraged. The recent May Day bank holiday held up well in terms of hotel occupancy at around 72%, although unfavourable weather limited improvements.
Alfonso Rojo of the Small and Medium Enterprises Federation of Ibiza noted that while some businesses have been operational ahead of Easter, others have only recently commenced to coincide with higher demand and major event openings. About 70% of Ibiza’s enterprises operate solely within the tourist season, with many choosing the end of April for their debut. Despite concerns over inflation and costs, the island remains poised for a promising summer, ready to welcome back its devoted British revellers.
